Silence

"By the time I arrived, the room had become terribly close.  When I said hello, Margarett did not speak. It was as if she couldn't hear me, and her face did not move. She sat that way, silent, all afternoon. As I stepped out of the heat onto the street, I fainted on the sidewalk. Margarett knew she would not recover from the stroke and that she would not draw again. It was as if the heat in the room were that realization, vivid and closing in. 'Simplification & elimination of line–is equal–no exceeds the opening of a window,' she'd written twenty years before."
